For all the lovers of the Ionian blue I decided to make this post and to share an amassing experience visiting the biggest Ionian island Kefalonia.
My first touch with Kefalonia was the pictures town Fiskardo, surrounded by green hills captured in a beutiful small bay, full of big yachts, boats and sailboats from all over the world.
As you can see...
If you are traveling by car like me, you can arrive in Fiskardo by ferry from nearby island Lefkada from small fisherman's village called Vassiliki. Ferry costs 35 euro per vehicle and 8,50 euro per adult, and the trip lasts for hour and a half.
I have to emphasis that Fiskardo being fashionable place is too expensive and I would recommend it only for a daily tour (unless you have a yacht). Near Fiskardo (1km) is beautiful Eblyssi beach. The beach is with sharp stones and beautiful see world (nice for snorkeling), but no umbrella and beds, no toilet, no taverna, absolutely nothing.

So I continued my way towards Argostoli, the capital and the biggest town of island.
Road from Fiskardo to Argostoli is more than good for a Greece island, but with many curves. The trip takes around one hour (40km), unless you want to stop on numerous viewpoints that are really breathtaking.
So let's go.....
First interesting place is 17km from Fiskardo where on your right side you can see small village called Assos placed on peninsula with the fortress on the hill.

As I already said the road is full of curves and you should have on mind that Greeks drive their car as fast as they can go, so no hurry just enjoy the view.

Next spot that you must not miss is the most famous beach of Kefalonia - Myrto beach. Look at that view....

WELCOME TO ARGOSTOLI

Argostoli is the biggest town on island with lot of tavernas and shops. As all the coastal cites Argostoli has pedestrian zone.

Overcrowded, of course. It is hard to find place to park your car from mid July to the end of August. My recommendation is to try on big parking at the end of the port.

| The Port |
In the port you can also find market with fresh fish that fisherman catch every morning (if you arrive before 10am), and can get it for a very good price (8 euro per kilo most of them). You can also find there a lot of greengrocery, with great choice of fresh fruit and vegetables, olives, domestic vine, spices, etc...

As you can imagine in most of the restaurants you have giro and souvlaki, but if you want some fresh seafood I recommend you restaurant Vinaries on Fanari road. It is not too fancy place, but it is on the coast, good prices, kind stuff....

But if you like something extremely fresh and you know to dive, you can get yourself a meal.

After dinner you can continue driving along Fanari road to watch beautiful sunset at the lighthouse.

On that part of the coast there is only one very small no name beach that I like, since it is very private and almost hidden.
One of the most important things on holiday is accommodation. If you choose to stay in Argostoli I really have to recommend the place where I stayed- Casa di Sonia apartments. There you will find fabulous Greek hospitality, great view, excellent clean and well equipped accommodation, as well as good prices. I think that location if just perfect - not in overcrowded center but nearby, and very close to the roads that lead to all the beautiful beaches.

Every week hosts organize a barbecue for their guests. It is really a great experience, with Greek food, domestic vines, ouzo, olives, cheese, Greek music and traditional dancing.

KEFALONIA BEACHES
And now I will show you beautiful beaches of Kefalonia island - the reason why we are here. The nearest beaches are in Lassi, resort 1km from Argostoli.
First beach is Makrys Gialos. It is big beach with fine sand, tavernas, sunbeds, umbrellas, all water sport facilities, good for children and good access, parking... But overcrowded, too noisy, all in all I didn't like it.

Next beach is Platys Gialos. It is a small cove next to Makrys Gialos. It is very nice beach, with all facilities, also find sand, good for diving, since it has a lot of rocks on the left side. It also has so called White Rock. I would recommend this beach, but I had to say it is also overcrowded with too many little children. If you want to find free parking space and sunbeds ( renting 2 euro for sunbed, 2 euro for umbrella ) you must come early in the morning ( 9 am ).

Next beach I liked is Avithos, some 10km from Argostoli. Also fine sand, nice taverns with good food and Greek coffee. Color of water is beautiful, the beach is not overcrowded. Not good for diving, but excellent for small children because it is shallow 50m at least.

All the beaches on the south side of the island are with find sand and most of them have all the facility. But if you want to visit the beaches that are more attractive for me you should take a good ride.
Near the city called Sami on the East side of the island is beautiful beach called Antisamis. Also famous as place where some scenes from film "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" where taken. Good accessibility, 2 euro parking. Extremely clean water, also good for diving, white pebbles, not overcrowded. Not good for kids, since water is very deep near to coast.

Also one of the beaches I liked the most is placed on the west side of the island - Petani beach. You can reach this beach from port of Argostoli by ferry to Lixouri, than go by car some 14km north. This is easiest and cheapest way to reach Petani. Ferry price 3,5 euro per car, and 2,5 euro per adult.

Petani beach has umbrellas and sunbed, also there are two tavernas with fresh fish and squids. The beach is with small pebbles and very clean water. If you are lucky there are big waves. Let's see Petani beach...

OTHER THINGS TO SEE
On road from Argostoli to Sami you can stop by to see monastery Agios Gerasimos...

After monastery in Sami you can see natural phenomenon Melissani lake. The best time to be there is at noon because the sun is just above the hole and makes color of water fabulous.
